PRESENTATION
The KM DE CHANDO is a running race in the mountains, of the type “vertical kilometre”. In the nature, the route is mostly on hiking trails.
Switzerland's only double vertical kilometer was founded by David Salamin, who tragically disappeared on the Weisshorn in August 2013. In his memory, the committee continues to organize a race that has become legendary. For its first edition, the race offers a choice of two routes: the long route with a 2000m vertical drop (the DOUBLE KM), and the short route with a 1000m vertical drop (the VERTICAL KM).
To mark the 10th edition, the finish of the short course was exceptionally moved to the summit of the Illhorn to offer a triumphant finish to all participants. This change was so warmly welcomed by everyone that the committee decided to maintain this configuration for the following editions.
To attract both young and old runners, 2 different starting points have been set up: the long course and the RELAIS start at the STEP de Fang. The small course starts higher up, at the Mayens de la Rèche, as for the KID'S VERTICAL.
The finish of the children's race is in the main square of the picturesque resort of Chandolin. The finish of both the long and short runs is perched at an altitude of over 2,700m in an exceptional setting at the summit of the Illhorn, with spectacular views over the entire Rhone Valley, the Val d'Anniviers and the five 4,000s of the Imperial Crown.
From the various starting points at the STEP or La Rèche, the route is very winding up to the Chandolin sector. Then, for the DOUBLE KM and the VERTICAL KM, the climb to the top of the Illhorn becomes very steep, as runners take the line of the ski lift.
For spectators, there's a free chairlift to the Illhorn sector, and a festive atmosphere in Chandolin's main square with canteen, bar and children's entertainment.
